With participation of the feet

Simultaneous swelling of the wrist and feet indicates a non-local cause. Particularly at an advanced age, fluid retention due to poor vascular conditions or insufficient cardiac work must be considered. Restricted kidney function and thus less fluid excretion can also cause swelling of the feet and hands.

In this case, you can also test whether a dented area, for example at the ankle, will quickly recede or whether the dent will only very slowly become smaller. The latter speaks for an edema at this point. A disturbed lymph drainage can also be the cause. Likewise, increased fluid leakage from the vessels into the surrounding tissue is possible, for example after injuries, inflammation or an allergic reaction.

Together with rash

Diseases that cause rashes all over the body, such as the “children’s diseases” measles, rubella, rubella ringworm or the hand-foot-mouth disease (blisters on hands and feet, aphthae in the mouth) can also cause this rash on the wrist. In addition, swelling of the wrist is possible. Here, other symptoms are also important: Is there also fever, nausea, sweating, breathing difficulties, sweating?

If the rash is limited to the wrist, an allergic reaction must be considered. A skin rash can also occur as a reaction to a (new) medication. This would then generally not be limited to the wrist. A flat, sharply defined redness with overheating can also be caused by an infection of the skin with bacteria, a so-called erysipelas or erysipelas. If this is the reason, one often feels generally tired and has a fever.

During pregnancy

They can cause injuries such as falling on the wrist, especially if the wrist hurts additionally. Neurodermatitis can also be present if the skin is also very itchy, inflammatory and generally dry. An infection of any kind can lead to swelling, just like an overload and subsequent inflammation, for example a tendonitis.

In principle, the same triggers as in adults can be behind this, but systemic diseases such as heart failure are much less likely. Even joint degeneration can be ruled out more easily.
