Today he knows Yoga, whether he has ever read about it, heard about it, or even participated in a course. But where exactly does this Yoga come from and what is it? The word yoga comes from Sanskrit and means “to bind or yoke together” but it can also mean “union”.

Yoga has its origin in India and has existed for many hundreds of years. It is primarily a philosophical, spiritual view of life, which should lead the yogi to inner peace, concentration, consciousness and finally to enlightenment. This philosophy is closely related to Hindu attitudes.

Yoga is based on spiritual and mental pillars but also on physical exercises and meditation, thus uniting mind and philosophy and body. There are many different orientations and forms, old and new developments of Yoga. The yoga we know here in the western world usually has little to do with the actual spiritual teachings and attitudes and focuses much more on the health and physical aspects. This is especially the case in Hatha Yoga, for example.

Yoga and Health

Yoga unites mind and body. On the one hand, yoga has a meditative relaxing aspect, which should lead the practitioner to inner balance and peace. He becomes aware of himself and his body, can reduce stress and tension and find his center.

This happens through meditation but also through specific breathing exercises, which have a relaxing effect on our organism. Nowadays, people also make special use of the physical aspects of yoga to use it as a health-promoting training. Through its asanas (physical exercises), yoga strengthens the muscles, especially the deep and stabilizing muscles in the abdomen and back, problem areas that are especially important in the company of office work.

Strengthening and core stability are particularly important in yoga. But also the mobility is improved by gentle protruding movements. The body becomes more flexible and resilient. Yoga is considered to be particularly health-promoting and courses are also supported by health insurance companies.
