Zeaxanthin: Safety Assessment

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) with which no adverse effects were observed from zeaxanthin intake. A safety factor of 200 was considered.

EFSA identified a NOAEL of 150 mg of zeaxanthin daily per kilogram of body weight using a two-generation reproduction study. Taking into account the safety factor and the available data, a daily intake level of 0.75 mg of synthetic zeaxanthin per kilogram of body weight was considered safe and designated as the ADI (Acceptable daily intake).

For a person weighing 70 kg, the safe intake level is 53 mg of zeaxanthin.
