Zinc sulfate is commercially available as a gel for the treatment of cold sores (Lipactin, D: Virudermin). It is also sold as a proprietary preparation in some pharmacies (Zinci sulfatis hydrogel 0.1% FH). Hima Pasta is no longer available in many countries.
Structure and properties
Zinc sulfate is the zinc salt of sulfuric acid. It is present in the drugs as zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4 – 7 H2O, Mr = 287.5 g/mol). It is a white crystalline powder or colorless, translucent, weathering crystals that are very soluble in water. Zinc sulfate can be prepared from zinc oxide with sulfuric acid, for example:
- ZnO (zinc oxide) + H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) + 6 H2O (water) ZnSO4 – 7 H2O (zinc sulfate heptahydrate)
Effects
Zinc sulfate (ATC D02AB02) is believed to have antiviral, antiseptic, astringent and wound healing properties. The effects are based on attachment to membrane proteins of herpes viruses. This prevents penetration into the cells.
Indications
For local treatment or prevention of cold sores (herpes labialis). Zinc sulfate is also used in the form of suitable medicines for the treatment of skin diseases (copper zinc solution) and eye diseases.
Dosage
According to the professional information. Medicines are usually applied four times a day or more frequently. Treatment should be started as early as possible.
Contraindications
Zinc sulfate is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.
Interactions
Concomitant use of other cold sore creams is not recommended.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions.
