Zovirax eye ointment

Introduction

Zovirax® Eye Ointment is a medication against herpes viruses, especially against herpes simplex viruses. It is therefore an antiviral (medicine against viruses). If the eye is affected by herpes viruses, blisters form on the cornea.

Application

Since the eye ointment is an antiviral, Zovirax® Eye Ointment is only effective against virus-related infectious diseases of the eye. It should therefore only be used on the recommendation of a physician. It is used for the local treatment of herpes simplex infections of the eye and can be used for both acute and recurrent infections.

The eye ointment is applied to the inner side of the lower eyelid. To do this, the lower lid is pulled down and the ointment is placed in the conjunctival sac, which is then visible. Afterwards, the eye should be closed and the eyelid and eyeball moved so that the ointment is spread over the whole eye.

Since immediately after the application of the ointment, vision may be restricted, driving should be avoided for about 20 minutes. In addition, contact lenses should not be worn during treatment with Zovirax® eye ointment. Even after symptoms have subsided, treatment with Zovirax® Eye Ointment should continue for approximately three days. If symptoms worsen during treatment with Zovirax® Eye Ointment or if new symptoms occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately.

Effect

Zovirax® eye ointment contains the active ingredient acyclovir. This active ingredient inhibits the multiplication of the herpes simplex viruses. The active ingredient has to be activated to unfold its effect and this only happens in cells infected with herpes viruses. In healthy cells there is no activation and the drug does not interfere with the normal metabolic processes in the body.

Dosage

As a rule, Zovirax® Eye Ointment should be applied to the lower eyelid five times daily. About every four hours, a strand of the ointment about one centimeter long should be applied.

Side effects

Immediately after applying Zovirax® Eye Ointment, a slight burning sensation and blurred vision may occasionally occur in the eye. However, these side effects usually subside on their own after about 20 minutes. In addition, irritation, redness and inflammation may occur in and around the eye.

If an allergic reaction occurs, which is very rare, swelling of the face may occur. The active ingredient can also enter the bloodstream via the eye and cause side effects throughout the body. If Zovirax® Eye Ointment is used over a longer period of time (more than 14 days), inflammatory reactions of the lower corneal margin and conjunctiva may occur. However, these usually heal without complications.
