Pathogenesis (disease development)
The origin of binge eating disorder is not yet clear. It is likely that, as with other psychogenic eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, a combination of factors leads to the disorder.

- Genetic burden from parents, grandparents.
- Homo- and bisexuality in men
Behavioral causes
- Nutrition
- Recurrent dieting behavior
- Restrained eating behavior
- Psycho-social situation
- Relationship problems
- Food as a substitute satisfaction
- Low self-esteem
- Psychiatric illness of family members
- Neglect
- Overweight (BMI ≥ 25; obesity).
