Pathogenesis (disease development)

The origin of binge eating disorder is not yet clear. It is likely that, as with other psychogenic eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, a combination of factors leads to the disorder.

Etiology (causes)

Biographical causes

  • Genetic burden from parents, grandparents.
  • Homo- and bisexuality in men

Behavioral causes

  • Nutrition
    • Recurrent dieting behavior
    • Restrained eating behavior
  • Psycho-social situation
    • Relationship problems
    • Food as a substitute satisfaction
    • Low self-esteem
    • Psychiatric illness of family members
    • Neglect
  • Overweight (BMI ≥ 25; obesity).

Other causes

  • Pregnancy
  • Slimming mania of society
