Duration of the therapy
The duration of therapy for existing Perthes disease can vary from patient to patient. As a rule, complete reconstruction of the femoral head takes several, but at least 2 years. So far, no known treatment measure has been able to accelerate the restoration of the bone substance.
Only surgery on the femur can promote bone growth and accelerate healing. The duration of the load plays an enormous role in the therapy. Although there are more risks associated with surgery than with conservative therapy, the immobilization and the psychological burden on the child can be reduced. Accompanying physiotherapeutic treatment may be necessary beyond the normal scope of therapy and may last for years beyond the actual illness.
