Kidney and bladder tea is available in pharmacies and drugstores as ready-to-use products (e.g., Sidroga, Künzle, Morga) or as open goods.

Ingredients

A kidney and bladder tea is a mixture of various medicinal drugs. These include, for example:

  • Bearberry leaves
  • Birch leaves
  • Nettle herb
  • Goldenrod herb
  • Rosehip peels
  • Hauhechel root
  • Lovage root
  • Meadowsweet herb
  • Orthosiphon leaves
  • Peppermint leaves
  • Quack rootstock
  • Horsetail herb
  • Licorice root
  • Juniper berries

The composition of the products is inconsistent. So those who respond well to a product should continue to use it. In the Pharmacopoea Helvetica can be found an official preparation, the bladder tea PH.

Effects

Kidney and bladder tea, depending on its composition, has diuretic, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-adhesive and antispasmodic properties, among others. Some of the medicinal drugs are also added to improve the taste of the tea. Scientifically, the preparations are insufficiently documented, but a therapeutic trial is possible.

Fields of application

For the treatment of uncomplicated cystitis; for inflammation of the lower urinary tract.

Dosage

According to the package insert. The application depends on the product. The tea bag is poured over hot water and allowed to steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Typically, 1 to 2 cups are drunk about three to five times a day. During treatment, sufficient fluid should be consumed (flushing therapy).

Contraindications

Kidney and bladder tea is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the package insert.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions and gastrointestinal discomfort.
