Peppermint Oil Capsules

Products

Enteric-coated capsules containing peppermint oil have been approved in many countries since 1983 (Colpermin).

Structure and properties

Peppermint oil (Menthae piperitae aetheroleum) is the essential oil obtained from the fresh, flowering aerial parts of L. by steam distillation. It exists as a colorless to pale yellow or pale greenish-yellow liquid with a typical odor and taste that leaves a cool sensation.

Effects

Peppermint oil (ATC A16AX99) has tension-relieving and antispasmodic properties. The enteric-coated capsules do not dissolve until they reach the intestines, so there are no side effects in the stomach.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with cramps and flatulence.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Capsules are usually taken 3 times daily half an hour to an hour before meals with liquid.

Contraindications

Peppermint oil is contraindicated in hypersensitivity. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

The capsules are dissolved at a neutral pH. Therefore, antacids and other agents that cause an increase in pH may lead to premature dissolution in the stomach. Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment as this may cause side effects.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include heartburn, irritation of hemorrhoids, and hypersensitivity reactions. Very rarely, slowed heartbeat, headache, and skin rash are observed.
