Runny Nose (Rhinorrhea): Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, body weight, body height; furthermore:
    • Inspection (viewing).
      • Skin, mucous membranes and sclerae (white part of the eye).
    • Palpation (palpation) of the nerve pressure points.
  • ENT medical examination including anterior and posterior rhinoscopy (reflection of the nasal cavity from the nostril or nasopharynx), inspection of the nasopharynx (nasopharynx) [e.g., if foreign bodies are suspected in the nose].
  • Neurological examination – [e. E.g., if cerebrospinal rhinorrhea is suspected (e.g., after traumatic brain injury (TBI)]

Square brackets [ ] indicate possible pathological (pathological) physical findings.
