Procainamide

Medicines containing procainamide are no longer on the market in many countries. In some other countries, it is available as a solution for injection.

Structure and properties

Procainamide (C₁₃H₂₁N₃O, M_r = 235.3 g/mol) is a derivative of the local anesthetic procaine. Procaine is an ester; procainamide is an amide. Procainamide is present in drugs as procainamide hydrochloride.

Effects

Procainamide (ATC C01BA02) has antiarrhythmic properties. The effects are due to blockade of sodium channels.

Indications

For the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
