Pregelatinized Starch

Products

Pregelatinized starch is used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals, especially in tablets.

Structure and properties

Pregelatinized starch is obtained from corn starch, potato starch, or rice starch by mechanical processing in the presence of water with or application of heat. In this process, some or all of the starch granules burst. The powder is then dried. Pregelatinized starch is present as a white to yellowish-white powder and swells in cold water. It has good flow properties and is suitable for direct tableting.

Areas of application

As a binder (also for granule production), filler and disintegrant for tablets and capsules.
