Acetylsalicylic Acid and Esomeprazole

Products

The fixed combination containing 81 mg acetylsalicylic acid and 20 mg esomeprazole was approved in many countries in June 2012 in capsule form (Axanum). In the EU, the drug has been registered since 2011. The amount of acetylsalicylic acid contained is less than in Aspirin cardio and generics, which usually contain 100 mg of the active ingredient.

Effects

Acetylsalicylic acid (ATC B01AC56) is antiplatelet and antithrombotic. Esomeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion and acts as a gastric protector to prevent gastric and intestinal ulcers.

Indications

Prevention of thrombotic, cardio- and cerebrovascular events in patients requiring continuous low-dose acetylsalicylic acid treatment and prophylaxis against acetylsalicylic acid-associated gastric and/or duodenal ulcers.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Capsules are usually taken once daily.
