Often, there are no other symptoms besides amenorrhea. Nevertheless, the gynecologist will take a detailed medical history to see if life circumstances play a role, if other diseases are present, if abdominal surgeries have been done or if medications are taken. He will also ask exactly about the previous cycle.
Other diagnostic measures
A gynecological inspection and palpation of the vagina, uterus and ovaries is then performed, usually supplemented by an ultrasound examination. In some cases, a laparoscopy also follows, especially in cases of primary amenorrhea.
Diagnostics also include blood tests to detect hormonal disorders and other diseases. If necessary, a pregnancy test is also performed. If a brain tumor is suspected, a computed tomography scan of the skull is performed.
What therapy is available?
If treatment is needed, it will depend on the cause and the examination findings. The physician will discuss possible and reasonable measures together with the affected person, as well as any complications. Drug therapy is usually with hormone tablets.
