Symptoms
The so-called “baby blues” is a mild psychological upset of the mother after delivery that lasts for a few hours to days. It is common and usually occurs in the first 7-10 days after birth and manifests itself in:
- Mood lability
- Frequent crying or laughing, mood changes
- Sadness or happiness
- Irritability
- Difficulty concentrating, confusion
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Sleep disturbance
Causes
The exact causes are not fully understood. Hormonal, physical and social factors are held responsible.
Diagnosis
Baby blues, which are simple and go away on their own, must be diagnostically distinguished from postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, which are serious.
Treatment
No medical treatment is necessary. It is important to have an educational discussion with the mother and family members.
