Bepanthen eye drops belong to the ophthalmic family (preparations for use on the eye) and contain two important active ingredients. Dexpanthenol and sodium hyaluronate. Dexpanthenol is converted to vitamin B5 in the body and, as a component of coenzyme A, is involved in many metabolic reactions. It also binds fluids and acts as a water reservoir in the eye. Sodium hyaluronate, the salt of hyaluronic acid, acts as a so-called film former and supplies the eye with additional fluid. It thus reduces the unpleasant feeling of “rubbing” in dry eyes. Both active ingredients support each other in their effect, as one binds and stores the fluid and the other ensures that it remains on the surface of the eye for longer.
