Binge Eating Disorder (Bulimia Nervosa): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of bulimia nervosa (binge eating disorder).

Family history

  • Is there a history of mental illness in your family that is common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?
  • How can you characterize the personality of the person(s) involved? (Question to parents)

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • When do eating attacks occur? How frequently do they occur?
  • What countermeasures do you perform after the attack? Exercise? Laxatives? Vomiting?
  • Have you noticed any accompanying symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, or water retention in the tissues?
  • Do you have dental damage or have you been diagnosed with dental damage?
  • How do you perceive your own body?
  • Do you suffer from psychological changes such as autoaggressive behavior, depressiveness or social isolation?
  • Do you participate in sports? If so, what sports and how often?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Are you overweight? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • How has your body weight developed in the last time?
  • How often do you weigh yourself?
  • Has your appetite changed?
  • How can your eating behavior be described? Do you eat out of substitute satisfaction?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, which drugs and how often per day or per week?
