Bradycardia: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

How can ringworm be prevented?

There is no vaccine against parvovirus B19. The only measures to prevent infection are to maintain good hand hygiene and avoid contact with infected people. These measures are especially important for pregnant women. They are also better off avoiding entering a kindergarten or school if there has been an outbreak of ringworm there.

Sometimes bradycardia occurs in the unborn or newborn. During birth, the heart rate in the unborn baby often drops during a contraction. In apnea-bradycardia syndrome, premature babies suffer from shortness of breath and a slow heartbeat.

How does bradycardia develop?

Bradycardia occurs when the sinus node generates too few electrical impulses (sinus bradycardia). In this case, the heartbeat is slow but regular.

What are the symptoms of bradycardia?

Often, bradycardia causes no symptoms. Athletes, for example, do not feel that their heart beats more slowly during rest periods than non-athletes. Sometimes, however, the heart rate is so low that the heart pumps too little blood into the systemic circulation. As a result, the oxygen requirements – especially of the brain – are no longer adequately met. Headaches, dizziness, unconsciousness, nausea and vomiting are often the result.

There are many possible causes for bradycardia. Sinus bradycardia is not dangerous in athletes. Sometimes, however, the heart rhythm slows down when certain medications are taken. Particularly medications that affected persons take due to other rhythm disturbances show this side effect. In some cases, it is then necessary to discontinue the corresponding active ingredients or reduce their dose.

Treatment

It is not always necessary to treat a slow heartbeat. People with a healthy heart can often cope well with mild bradycardia. Bradycardia is usually problematic and in need of treatment only when symptoms appear and the heartbeat becomes dangerously slow (less than 40 beats per minute).

Self-help for cardiac arrhythmias

For people suffering from bradycardia, the best self-help is to consult a doctor when symptoms occur. However, regular check-ups are also advisable for healthy people, as various physical conditions promote cardiac arrhythmias. It is advisable for bradycardia sufferers to have their medications checked by a doctor, as numerous active ingredients sometimes trigger cardiac arrhythmias.
