Cetrimonium bromide is found in lozenges (e.g., Mebu-Lemon, Mebu-Cherry, formerly Lemocin). It has been approved in many countries since 1972.

Structure and properties

Cetrimonium bromide (C19H42BrN, Mr = 364.4 g/mol) is a quaternary amine with a long alkyl radical that is soluble in water. It is a constituent of cetrimide.

Effects

Cetrimonium bromide (ATC D08AJ02) has antiseptic properties.

Indications

As a surface disinfectant. Cetrimonium bromide is approved in combination with other active ingredients for the treatment of inflammation of the mouth and throat and is used, for example, to treat sore throats and aphthae.

Anionic surfactants, such as those found in toothpastes, may reverse the effects.
