Structure and properties

Clascoterone (C24H34O5, Mr = 402.5 g/mol) corresponds to the steroid cortexolone-17α-propionate. It exists as a white powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Clascoterone has antiandrogenic properties. The effects are due to antagonism at androgen receptors. Androgens such as dihydrotestosterone are associated with the development of acne.

Indications

For the treatment of acne vulgaris (acne) starting at age 12 years.

Dosage

According to the professional information. After cleansing the skin, the cream is applied thinly in the morning and evening.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include local reactions such as skin redness, itching, scaling, and dry skin. Especially when used inappropriately (high dose, large surface area, occlusion), the hypothalamic-pituitary axis may be suppressed.
