Dental Neuritis (Pulpitis): Therapy

General measures

  • Observe general oral hygiene! Since most pulpitides caused by bacteria are triggered by caries, regular dental prophylaxis is useful and necessary.
  • Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use).
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition by means of electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised weight loss program or program for the underweight.
    • BMI ≥ 25 → participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.
    • Falling below the BMI lower limit (from the age of 45: 22; from the age of 55: 23; from the age of 65: 24) → Participation in a medically supervised program for the underweight.
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.

Dental therapy procedures

  • To preserve the vitality of the tooth in reversible (reversible) pulpitis, removal of the initiating cause is essential.
  • In irreversible pulpitis, root canal treatment must be performed. The goals of any endodontic treatment are the preservation of the diseased tooth and the permanent prevention of harmful consequences for the entire organism, which can emanate from a diseased tooth. In addition, cysts and possibly granulomas must be removed with a root tip resection. In this case, the root tip is separated by a surgical procedure in the bone, the inflammatory tissue is removed and the wound is closed again, so that the tooth is still preserved.
  • Hopelessly destroyed teeth and teeth, which have already caused the most severe abscesses, must be removed.
