Drug treatment
In case of very strong tensions it may be necessary to take medication. In this case, painkillers are available, which usually have an anti-inflammatory function in addition to an analgesic function. In very severe cases, drugs that are otherwise used for neurological clinical pictures (e.g. epilepsy) can also be used.
These drugs reduce muscle tone and cause the muscles’ own strength to decrease. The result of a partial muscle slackening is that the tension decreases. It is important to note that after the medication has worn off, the symptoms become stronger again if the actual cause of the tension is not eliminated. It is also possible to inject drugs for muscle relaxation directly into the affected muscle.
Here, too, the return of the symptoms must be taken into account if the actual situation is not changed. In recent years, traditional Chinese methods for the treatment of muscle tension have become established alongside conventional medical and physiotherapeutic methods. Acupuncture, which is quite successful when used regularly, is a decisive factor here.
Needles are inserted at appropriate intervals near the neck muscles and left there for some time. The sessions should be repeated at regular intervals before an improvement in symptoms can be expected.
