Elderberry: Effect and Side Effects

Elderberry flowers probably increase the excitability of the sweat glands to heat stimuli, which is why there is an increased secretion of sweat. However, the active ingredients responsible for this and the exact mechanism of action are still largely unclear. Recently, new active substances contained in elderberry have been discovered (N-phenylpropanoyl-lamino acid amides), which prevent the bacterium Helicobacter pylori from attaching to the gastric mucosa. The attachment of this bacterium to the gastric mucosa is the main cause of gastric ulcers.

Other effects of elderberry

Furthermore, elderberry leads to an increase in bronchial secretion, which leads to the relief of dry cough.

There is also evidence that elderberry acts as follows:

  • Diuretic
  • Laxative
  • Weak anti-inflammatory
  • Antixodative

Side effects of elderberry

When taking elderberry flowers side effects or interactions with other means are not expected. Also, there are currently no known contraindications.
