Firocoxib

Products

Firocoxib is commercially available as chewable tablets for dogs and as a paste for administration in horses. It has been approved in many countries since 2004.

Structure and properties

Firocoxib (C17H20O5S, Mr = 336.4 g/mol) is a furanone derivative. Like other COX-2 inhibitors, it has a V-shaped structure that allows binding to the Active Site of the enzyme.

Effects

Firocoxib (ATCvet QM01AH90) has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. The effects are due to selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 and inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.

Indications

For the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis or after surgery in dogs. For the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in horses.

Dosage

According to the product information. Tablets are dosed according to body weight and can be given with or without feed.

Contraindications

Firocoxib is contraindicated in hypersensitivity. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Firocoxib should not be given with other NSAIDs, with glucocorticoids, diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and nephrotoxic drugs because adverse effects may be increased.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include digestive disturbances such as vomiting and diarrhea. Lesions of the oral mucosa are occasionally observed in horses. Rarely, severe adverse reactions such as gastrointestinal ulcers, renal and hepatic dysfunction are possible and may be fatal.
