Lily of the Valley: Effect and Side Effects

The cardiac glycosides contained inhibit a specific transporter on the heart muscle cells (Na/K-ATPase), resulting in an increase in calcium content in the cells. This strengthens cardiac output, reduces cardiac resistance by lowering venous pressure, and ultimately improves cardiac work and efficiency.

Convallatoxin also promotes the excretion of sodium and potassium, thus having a diuretic effect.
