Marshmallow leaves and marshmallow roots have soothing and cough-irritating effects, which is attributed to the relatively high content of mucilage. The mucilages attach to surface cells, forming a protective film over the mucosa. In cats, mechanically triggered coughs were significantly reduced by marshmallow leaf syrup and isolated polysaccharides.
Other effects of marshmallow leaf extracts include stimulation of immune processes and release of free radicals and pro-inflammatory substances (cytokines).
