Musculus gluteus maximus

english: large gluteus muscle

  • To the musculature overview

The gluteus maximus takes its 16 cm long and 4 cm wide origin from the iliac spine back surface and acts in alternation with the Musculus iliopsoas when walking upright. While the iliopsoas contracts during flexion of the hip joint, the musculus gluteus maximus is stressed during extension. more information:

Approach, Origin, Innervation

Base: Roughness of the lateral lip of the femur (Tuberoitas glutaea femoris) Origin: Innervation: N. gluteus inf.

  • Posterior surface of iliac crest (Fascia thoracolumbalis)
  • Dorsal surface of the sacrum– ischial tuberosity ligament (Lig. Sacrotuberale)

Due to its many functions, the gluteus maximus can be contracted by numerous forms of exercise.

Among the most common exercises:

  • Leg press
  • Squats
  • Abductor machine
  • Seat trainer

To stretch the musculus gluteus maximus in a targeted manner, the athlete stands on one leg and tries to pull the thigh towards the abdomen. The knees are grasped by the hands. You can find the latest scientific findings on this topic under Stretching

Function

The function of the large gluteus muscle is to stretch the hip joint strongly. This is done when standing up from a squatting position, when walking etc. By the attachment at the thigh bandage it is furthermore able to carry out an extension of the lower leg in the knee joint.

When bending the upper body forward, the large gluteal muscle prevents it from falling over due to strong contraction. In addition, it partially takes over the function of adduction and external rotation in the hip joint.
