Otosclerosis: Diagnostic Tests

Obligatory medical device diagnostics.

  • Otoscopy(ear examination) [usually unremarkable, may be able to detect through the tympanic membranethe active reddish focus of otosclerosis (as a so-called Schwartz sign; hyperemia (increased blood flow) of the promontory (anatomical structure in the tympanic cavity of the middle ear)].
  • Tone audiometry – testing of hearing with the measurement of volumes of different high tones that just cause hearing sensation [hearing loss in the frequency range 1,000 and 4,000 Hz (Carhat depression)]
  • Gellé test – test for the mobility of the ossicles [test result: negative, i.e. in the impedance test, the stapedius reflex can not be triggered].

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the medical history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics and mandatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.
