Effect
Otriven nasal spray ensures that the nasal mucosa swells. To do this, the active ingredient xylometazoline binds to docking sites (receptors) on the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa. As a result, the blood vessels contract and the nasal mucosa swells.
In this way, the nasal spray relieves a blocked nose, patients can breathe better through the nose again, and secretions drain away more easily.

Side effects
Patients often feel nauseous during treatment, have headaches or suffer side effects directly at the site of administration in the nose. Affected people then have a burning or dry nose or have to sneeze frequently.
Occasional side effects include nosebleeds or a more stuffy nose after the effect of the nasal spray wears off.
Rarely, patients develop rapid heart palpitations or high blood pressure while using the nasal spray.
Very rare side effects include insomnia and restlessness, brief visual disturbances, irregular heartbeat, or allergic reactions with rash, itching, and swelling of the mucous membranes. In children, hallucinations, seizures or breathing problems also occur very rarely as side effects.
