Runny Nose (Rhinorrhea): Test and Diagnosis

2nd order laboratory parameters – depending on the results of the history, physical examination and obligatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Small blood count
  • Differential blood count
  • Inflammatory parameter – CRP (C-reactive protein)
  • Allergy tests – e.g., epicutaneous test (in this test, a patch is applied to the patient’s skin containing various allergens; after two to three days, the patch can be removed and the test assessed)
  • Beta-2 transferrin from rhinorrhea fluid – if CSF fistula is suspected [positive; beta-2 transferrin occurs that almost only in CSF].
