Thiomerasal has been used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals, especially in liquid dosage forms such as eye drops and vaccines. It is rarely used today because of the potential adverse effects. The substance is also known as thimerosal.
Structure and properties
Thiomerasal (C9H9HgNaO2S, Mr = 404.8 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder and is readily soluble in water. It is the sodium salt of an organic mercury compound.
Effects
Thiomersal has antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal properties.
Indications for use
As a preservative, mainly for liquid medicines such as eye drops and vaccines.
Adverse effects
Thiomerasal is controversial as a mercury compound. It can cause various adverse effects, especially allergic reactions. Its use is no longer recommended.
