Violet Root

Products

Violet roots are available in pharmacies or drugstores. Specialty retailers can order them from Dixa, Sahag or Hänseler, for example. The whole rhizome (Iridis rhizoma pro infantibus; violet root for children) is used, not the cut drug or powder.

Effects

Biting on the root has analgesic effects. The roots contain essential oils and have a pleasant taste. The mucilage contained is also believed to be involved in the effect.

Fields of application

For the treatment of teething problems in infants and young children.

Application

The root can be tied, for example, to a piece of clothing of the little ones, who can bite on it if necessary.

Stem plant

Irises: Iridaceae, drug: Iridis rhizoma pro infantibus. The drug must be stored for a long time until it develops its typical smell of violets and is offered in stores.

Contraindications

Violet root should not be used in case of hypersensitivity. We have no data on safety during pregnancy and lactation.

Interactions

Not known.

Adverse effects

The root may be a breeding ground for microorganisms. In case of regular use or if it falls on the ground, it should be boiled during 5 minutes. Ingredients may be lost in the process. Alternatively, an ordinary bite ring can be used.
