2-Phenylphenol is commercially available as a drug in combination with other disinfectants as a solution (Kodan).

Structure and properties

2-Phenylphenol (C₁₂H₁₀O, M_r = 170.21 g/mol) is a phenol substituted at position 2 with a benzene ring. It exists as a white powder or solid.

Effects

2-Phenylphenol has antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal) and antiviral properties. The effects are attributed to the coagulation of cytoplasmic membrane and cytoplasmic proteins. In addition, enzyme functions are inhibited. Disruption of membrane function leads to leakage of cell contents in bacteria and fungi.

Indications for use

• In combination with other disinfectants for disinfection of the skin and hands.
• As a preservative for citrus.
