Terpine hydrate is commercially available in suppository form (Rectoseptal, combination). It has been approved in many countries since 1951.
Structure and properties
Terpine hydrate (C10H20O2 – H2O, Mr = 190.3 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder or as colorless and shiny crystals. It is sparingly soluble in water.
Effects
Terpine hydrate (ATC R05CA10) is believed to have expectorant, cough-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties.
Indications
For supportive treatment of bronchial and pulmonary diseases.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Suppositories are administered one to three times daily.
Contraindications
Terpin hydrate is contraindicated in hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
There are no known interactions with other drugs.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include digestive discomfort. Use in infants is controversial and is not recommended by the EMA.
