How long does the insertion take?

The insertion of the coil, regardless of whether it is a copper or hormone coil, usually takes only a few minutes. Usually a short explanation and consultation with the doctor is held beforehand. The time required is generally short, however, and averages about 15-30 minutes.

For whom is the insertion of a copper spiral not suitable?

Women who show changes in the uterus, such as fibroids or tumors, are not considered candidates for a IUD. The IUD is not a suitable contraceptive for women with inflammation of the abdomen or who have undergone ectopic pregnancy. It should also not be used in the case of certain disorders of blood coagulation (see: Blood coagulation disorders) or an allergy to special contents of the coil. For clarification of the criteria which may speak against the use of a coil, it is best to consult your gynaecologist.

How safely does it protect against pregnancy?

The copper spiral is one of the safest contraceptives on the market. The rate of unplanned pregnancies using a copper coil is approximately 0.4-1.5%. The copper coil is therefore in about the same safety range as the contraceptive pill. The hormone coil also offers very safe protection. The percentage of women who nevertheless became pregnant is 0-0.5 %.
