Foods to avoid in case of arthrosis
Just as a diet can have a positive influence on osteoarthritis, there are foods that should be avoided.These are inflammation-promoting and often generally unhealthy products. In addition, weight loss is also in the foreground here. Most expert and study opinions have in common that an essential part of the diet in osteoarthritis is the reduction or better the renunciation of meat and eggs.
Especially pork seems to have a negative effect on the course of arthrosis. So-called white meat such as poultry is considered to be most likely to be harmless. Other foods that should be avoided are other animal products such as butter or sausage.
Cheese is also among them. All these products contain substances that promote inflammation and unhealthy, saturated fatty acids. In addition, one gains weight through the calories contained in large quantities.
White flour products are foods that one should also avoid. White bread, toast and most baked goods contain white flour and should be replaced by wholemeal products. Also, most finished products and especially fast food of any kind should be avoided.
These products contain artificial additives and non-full-fledged ingredients that lead to strong weight gain and release a large amount of oxidatively active substances. However, it is not only the solid food components that have an influence on the body. Just as important are the drinks consumed.
Coffee and alcohol are drinks that should be avoided. It has been observed that excessive consumption of coffee aggravates the pain of osteoarthritis and increases the need for medication. Also, the pro-inflammatory substances that are effective in coffee worsen the nutrition of cartilage and bones.
The same applies to the consumption of alcohol. In addition, black tea should also be avoided. Like coffee, meat and fats, black tea stimulates the production of acidic substances in the body, which has a negative effect on bone and cartilage structure.
Nutritional example with arthrosis
There are many ways to implement the above-mentioned tips on nutrition in osteoarthritis. The following nutritional example is intended to provide suggestions and show that a suitable diet is not difficult. In addition to this nutritional example, sufficient fluids must be ensured throughout the day.
Water or juice spritzers are best.
- Morning: A bowl of wholemeal muesli or oatmeal is suitable for breakfast. Together with sliced fruit and a little low-fat milk or yogurt, it makes a rich, healthy breakfast.
- Lunchtime: Fresh vegetables like leek, savoy cabbage or kale contain many vitamins and antioxidants.
Onions, carrots and potatoes can be added to these vegetables. Alternatively, low-fat fish can be eaten 1-2 times a week; naturally fried in rapeseed oil. You can also serve wholesome brown rice.
- In the evening: Here a snack can follow. It is important to eat wholemeal bread and to avoid meat-containing cold cuts or spreads and cheese. Honey or jam are recommended as long as they are not additionally sugared.
