Frequent urination at night

All circumstances which can be the cause of a polyuria occurring during the day can also lead to a flood of urine at night. However, a nocturia (from the ancient Greek nocturia for urinating at night) can be distinguished from this, in which there is increased urination at night or sleep is interrupted once or several times to urinate. On the one hand, a disturbance of the bladder function or, for example, a narrowing of the urinary tract can be the cause of a benign enlargement of the prostate.

On the other hand, some diseases lead to an increased nightly urine production. For example, in the course of the day in the context of cardiac insufficiency, i.e. a cardiac insufficiency, water is stored in the tissues, mainly in the legs due to gravity. Due to the horizontal position of the body when lying down to sleep, these edemas are now increasingly flushed out of the tissue because the heart no longer has to overcome the slope to the legs. Due to the reduced energy consumption of the organs, the heart does not need to pump as much fluid at night as during the day, so that the increased fluid can be better excreted overnight.

Frequent urination in diabetes

Urinary flood can occur as a sign of a disturbed sugar metabolism or a derailed blood sugar level. Thus, within the framework of an already known diabetes mellitus, a polyuria (= urinary flood) can occur in a poorly adjusted diabetic. However, a urinary flood together with polydypsia, i.e. an increased feeling of thirst, can also frequently be the first symptom of diabetes mellitus.

The body tries to get rid of the increased blood sugar level by excreting excess sugar through the kidneys. Since the sugar causes water to be carried along, this results in a flood of urine.
