Alternatives to Thyrostatics
Thyrostatics are only one option in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. However, the effect of thyrostatics is not sufficient, especially if the hyperthyroidism is more pronounced. Surgery, in which part or all of the thyroid tissue is removed, can permanently eliminate the disease, but those affected must take thyroid hormones for life. Even with radioiodine therapy, the thyroid tissue is completely destroyed and the overproduction of hormones is stopped. This is a therapy with radioactive iodine. The appropriate therapy should be discussed between the patient and his treating physician.
Are there prescription-free thyrostatics?
The classic thyrostatics are all available only on prescription. Taking thyrostatics is a serious intervention in the body’s functions and self-therapy could have serious consequences. In cases of mild hyperthyroidism, natural preparations such as wolfstraw can be used. These over-the-counter preparations have a slightly inhibitory effect on hormone production, but are not suitable for the treatment of a fully developed hyperthyroidism.
