Application areas

Nasonex has two main applications. The most important one is allergic rhinitis, which can be seasonal, probably better known as hay fever, or year-round. As the name suggests, it is an allergic reaction in certain months to pollen or grasses, or without a time connection, e.g. to cat hairs or dust mites.

Nasonex is successfully used against the symptoms, not the disease itself. Nasonex is approved against hay fever in children from 6 years of age. It can be administered nasally if necessary or, especially in known severe cases of hay fever, up to 4 weeks in advance as a preventive measure.

Secondly, Nasonex is used in the treatment of nasal polyps. These are benign mucous membrane proliferations, which are probably favored in their development by chronic sinusitis. In themselves without any disease value, they can impede breathing and lead to secondary diseases. The antiproliferative effect of Nasonex prevents further growth and causes the polyps to shrink somewhat. It is approved for use in young adults from the age of 18, but is not suitable for children.

Contraindications

Nasonex® should not be used if you have an existing infection in your nose, as it weakens the body’s local defenses. If an injury in the nose exists, likewise from the use is to be advised against, since glucocortocoids disturb the Wundheilung.

Dosage

The usual dose for use against allergic rhinitis, unless otherwise prescribed, is two sprays into each nostril once a day, each spray containing about 40 micrograms of the active substance. For nasal polyps, the usual dose is the same as for hay fever, two sprays once a day in each nostril. Nasonex® is sold in packs of 60 or 140 sprays.
