Possible complications

In addition to the side effects of the Mirena Spiral, serious complications can occur. During insertion of the IUD, the insertion device may perforate the uterus. The insertion device pierces the tissue and creates an opening in the abdominal cavity.

Therefore, the position of the IUS is checked sonographically immediately after insertion. If a perforation is present, surgical removal of the IUS and covering of the damaged tissue is necessary. Another possible, rare complication is ectopic pregnancy. In this case, the fertilized egg nests in the fallopian tube. Ectopic pregnancies do not allow the child to grow and are dangerous for the women, so that an abortion is absolutely necessary.

Interactions with other drugs

There are hardly any interactions with other drugs to be expected, since the hormone coil acts locally in the uterus and releases hormones there. For the local contraceptive effect it is irrelevant whether and which other drugs are taken. However, it is possible that the progestins in the Mirena IUD are broken down more quickly if certain drugs for seizures (anticonvulsants) and drugs for infections are taken at the same time.

The contraceptive protection of the Mirena coil is not affected by antibiotics. This means that the hormone coil has a contraceptive effect even if an antibiotic is taken. For each patient individual reasons are possible, which could speak against taking an antibiotic, such as an allergy. Nevertheless, the wearing of an IUS for contraception should be reported to the treating physician.
