Avobenzone

Products

Avobenzone is found in sunscreens, scar ointments, and cosmetics.

Structure and properties

Avobenzone (C20H22O3, Mr = 310.4 g/mol) is a diketone that exists as a white, crystalline, and odorless solid.

Effects

Avobenzone is a UVA filter with a broad absorption spectrum. The maximum is at 357 nm.

Areas of application

To protect the skin from UV radiation, e.g. in sunscreens and scar ointments.

Undesirable effects

Avobenzone is photolabile, which means that it loses its effectiveness rapidly and to a high extent when exposed to sunlight. However, with the addition of adjuvants called photostabilizers, efficacy can be maintained. According to the safety data sheet, pure avobenzone is very toxic to aquatic organisms and can exert harmful effects in water.
