- In addition to drug therapy (see below), careful oral hygiene (regular brushing with toothpastes with additives of zinc or zinc fluoride) is necessary. Furthermore, regular dental check-ups are required.

Preparations with the following active ingredients have proven effective against halitosis – or rather against the bacteria:
- Chlorhexidine digluconate
- Amine fluoride, stannous fluoride
- Triclosan
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Cetyl pyridine chloride (CPC)
- Essential oils
- Metal salt solutions – e.g. zinc chloride
Note: The antiseptic chlorhexidine can cause an anaphylactic reaction in rare cases.
