Benzydamine is available in many countries as oral sprays and solution for mouthwashes and gargling (Bucco-Tantum). The dosage forms for oral use, for example, Tantum dragées, are no longer commercially available. The active ingredient has been approved in many countries since 1978.
Structure and properties
Benzydamine (C19H23N3O, Mr = 309.4 g/mol) is present in drugs as benzydamine hydrochloride. It is a benzylated indazole derivative.
Effects
Benzydamine (ATC A01AD02) has anti-inflammatory, local anesthetic, mild bactericidal, and fungicidal properties. Taken orally, it is additionally antipyretic and analgesic and is also known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory.
Indications
For symptomatic treatment of pain and irritation of the mouth and throat, for example, sore throat.
Dosage
According to the professional information. Medicines are used several times a day. Eating, drinking, or oral hygiene may reduce effectiveness.
Contraindications
Benzydamine is contraindicated in hypersensitivity. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.
Interactions
No drug-drug interactions are known with topical use.
Adverse effects
