Calf Swelling: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of calf swelling.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the swelling been present now?
  • Is one or are both calves affected?
  • Does the swelling enter only the calf or also the entire leg?
  • Did the discomfort occur acutely (suddenly) or gradually?
  • Are there other symptoms such as fever* , redness of the skin, restricted movement in the ankle?
  • Do you have pain in the calf* ?
  • Is the leg overheated and swollen?* .
  • If so, did the pain start acutely or develop over time?
  • Have you recently had a long-haul flight, a long trip, or immobilization under plaster or after surgery (operation)* ?
  • Are you limited by your resilience* ? How many floors can you climb stairs without shortness of breath?
  • Have you ever noticed swelling in the back of your knee?
  • Is the swelling cycle related (woman)?

  • Are you overweight? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).

Self anamnesis incl. medication anamnesis

  • Pre-existing conditions (cardiovascular disease, infections, skin diseases, liver disease, tumor disease).
