Products
Clavulanic acid is sold exclusively in combinations with antibiotic amoxicillin. In addition to the original Augmentin, numerous generics are also available.
Structure and properties
Clavulanic acid (C8H9NO5, Mr = 199.16 g/mol) is present in drugs as potassium clavulanate, the potassium salt of clavulanic acid. Potassium clavulanate is a white, crystalline, hygroscopic powder that is very soluble in water.
Effects
Clavulanic acid inhibits the β-lactamases of bacteria, protecting the penicillin amoxicillin from inactivation. It has only weak antibacterial effects itself.
Indications
For the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases, in combination with penicillin amoxicillin.
