Dandelion: Applications and Uses

The intake of roots and leaves of dandelion helps especially in disorders of bile flow and digestive complaints such as flatulence and bloating. Furthermore, preparations made from or containing dandelion are said to stimulate appetite and urination.

Due to the immunlogical effect of the bitter substances contained in dandelion, the drug can also be taken to strengthen the immune system. In traditional medicine, dandelion is generally used to support the excretory function of the kidneys.

Dandelion in folk medicine

In folk medicine, dandelion was used as early as the 16th century for stomach and liver problems, constipation, insufficient urination and to cleanse the kidneys and blood. Other applications include rheumatic diseases, itching (eczema) and other skin diseases.

Application in homeopathy

Homeopathy uses dandelion to treat liver diseases and digestive disorders, as well as in anthroposophic therapy.

Ingredients of dandelion

The main active ingredients of dandelion are bitter compounds such as taraxacin, eudesmolides and sesquiterpenes, and besides triterpenes, flavonoids and phenylcarboxylic acids. Dandelion also has a relatively high potassium content.
