Diagnosis of Sarcoidosis of the skin
Since sarcoidosis causes characteristic symptoms of the skin, those affected usually see a doctor early. The general practitioner can gain a first impression and, depending on accompanying symptoms, initiate further examinations if necessary. A referral to a dermatologist is typically made.
In most cases, the dermatologist takes biopsies, tissue samples, and examines them microscopically. The dermatologist will take a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis if sarcoidosis of the skin is suspected. For this purpose, the skin area to be examined is first anaesthetized and disinfected and then cut out with a scalpel. The biopsy is then examined under a microscope.
