Dimpylate

Dimpylate is commercially available in the form of insecticide collars (“flea collars”) for cats and dogs. It has been approved in many countries since 1981.

Structure and properties

Dimpylate (C12H21N2O3PS, Mr = 304.3 g/mol) is a monothiophosphoric ester.

Effects

Dimpylate (ATCvet QP53AF03) is insecticidal and acaricidal and protects against insect attack for approximately 4-5 months. The effects are due to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, resulting in nervous system disorders.

Indications

For the treatment and prevention of infestations of fleas, ticks, and lice. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Dosage

According to the package insert. Fasten the band to the neck and check the fit regularly. Do not open the package until you are ready to put it on. Do not allow the tape to enter water bodies as it is toxic to aquatic organisms.

Contraindications

Dimpylate should not be used on animals that are too young, sick or convalescing.

Interactions

Concurrent use of other insecticides is not recommended.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include skin irritation and allergic reactions.
