When we were small children, if we ate fruit and then drank water, we could expect to be admonished by adults. Because, according to the opinion at the time, drinking water on fruit produces a bad stomach ache.
Fruit and water are well digestible
As for this warning of our well-meaning parents or better grandparents, the Federal Research Institute of Nutrition gives the all-clear. This says namely, the combination of water and fruit is quite well digestible.
Reason: In the past, drinking water contained all kinds of germs. These caused the fruit to ferment in the stomach, which in turn had the familiar consequences of flatulence, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Nowadays, the water quality is so good that there are no bacteria in the water. Consequently, fruit and water are a “compatible” pair after all.
