Doppler Sonography and Duplex: Visualizing Blood Flow

When is Doppler sonography used?

  • pregnancy-related high blood pressure and the resulting clinical pictures
  • (preeclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome)
  • Examination of the heart function of the fetus
  • Suspicion of fetal heart defects
  • Suspicion of growth disturbance or malformations of the child
  • History of miscarriage
  • twins, triplets and other multiple pregnancies

How does Doppler sonography work?

From the change in frequency, the Doppler ultrasound device calculates the flow velocity and thus allows the physician to draw conclusions about the cross-section or condition of the blood vessels or organs being examined.

Doppler sonography and duplex sonography: What is the difference?

What are the risks of duplex and Doppler sonography?

As with all other ultrasound procedures, duplex and Doppler sonography are harmless and painless examination methods. There is no radiation exposure for the patient, as is the case with X-rays or computer tomography, for example.
